Angus is an Australian Cattle Dog (ACD), also known as a Blue Heeler. He was purchased on impulse from a breeder in Carthage, Tennessee many years ago -- but not without knowledge of the breed.
Cattle Dogs are smart. Too smart. They know what is happening in their world. They watch and listen to every move you make, and every word that you utter. Get up to go to the bathroom and you will be followed. Cooking dinner? They will be right by the stove watching and sniffing everything that goes into the pot. Bad day at work? They know about it and might cower in the corner or snuggle next to you depending on your mood. Sick? Fight with the spouse? Packing your bags to go on vacation? They will know about it and respond in a manner that is truly unique to Cattle Dogs.
Angus is very vocal when he gets excited. His bark will let you know what he knows. He is great at alerting Peter and Patty about perimeter breaches by unwelcome humans or other wild animals passing through the area. He has distinctive barks (voices) for excitement, injury, fear, anger, or warning of perceived danger. Listen to him closely -- and act accordingly.
Angus is a free-spirit who refuses to be trained. He will "perform tricks", but only at his discretion or for dog treats. He is fiercely protective of Patty; tolerates Peter; and is fearful of Belle. When he is not sleeping, he is patrolling the house and anxiously waiting for his humans to arrive and take him for a long and strenuous walk through the mountains -- 14-mile hikes are no problem for this boy.
Angus can't catch a tennis ball to save his life, but he is pretty good with a Frisbee.
Look for Angus on the local trails in Hinsdale County with his humans, rolling in deer scat, or running away from Belle.
