The High Country Market will transition to winter hours on Monday September 22, 2014. Our new hours will be:
We worked 7-days a week during the 2014 tourist season, and we logged nearly 3,000 combined hours serving our customers. We worked at home before and after work; traveled to Montrose, Gunnison, and Olathe in search of Colorado produce and meat; and we listened to your feedback and suggestions.
We had a successful season, and we could not have made it without your support -- THANK YOU!
As you return to the rigors of your daily life in the city, we will finally have time to relax and explore the beautiful mountains that surround Lake City.
Thanks again for visiting Lake City and shopping at The High Country Market -- see ya next year!
Peter and Patty
Everyday is an opportunity for Patty and I to share in the decision-making process of owning and operating The High Country Market in Lake City, Colorado. There are no boards or commissions to report to; no internal Government bureaucracy to with; and no corporate board of directors to please -- only our customers.
Our tourist season came an end in September. We reduced our hours and started closing on Monday and Tuesday of each week. After these changes were made, we relied on local resident dollars, hunters, and a few 2nd-homeowners to keep things moving at our new business.
Business was good for the winter season, but our customer response was mixed.
Many of our customers understood our desire to have some time away from the store, but others were missing us on Monday and Tuesday -- and shopping elsewhere. We talked to our customers about our days and hours of operation and their desire for us to be open; crunched the numbers; and we came to a decision:
Starting on December 30, 2013 we will open 7 days each week from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm. These new operating days/hours will allow us to continue to grow and serve the residents of Lake City. We will provide one full-time job to a local resident (Katie), and we will reach-out to other local residents for part-time and full-time positions for the 2014 season. During the winter months we will experiment with a special order process for our customers; develop an online ordering system; and initiate some product and vendor changes.
Thanks for your support!
Tomorrow is "truck day", and for those of you who know the routine here at The High Country Market, you know that we will be driving to South Fork to meet our GDi grocery delivery truck.
During the off-season we meet our driver at the South Fork Visitor Center to pick-up our weekly order. Our driver (Dennis or Nick from GDi) will offload pallets of produce from a refrigerated semi-truck and then help us load everything into our AWD Chevy van for the drive back over Slumgullion Pass. Frozen products and perishables are packed in dry ice for the drive back to Lake City.
Every day is a great to shop at The High Country Market, but Wednesday is the best day to shop for produce.
One of the great things about working with GDi, is that we are able to make a "specialty order" from DPi Specialty Foods. GDi and DPI work together on a "cross-dock" basis, and that means that we have access to thousands of products that might otherwise be unavailable to our little store in the mountains. We (and you) are able to order specialty items like: soy products, gluten-free bread, organic cookies, and other higher-end products that are normally found in Whole Foods or Trader Joe's.
Patty is our "order gal", and she is constantly ordering new products to see what might catch the attention of our customers. Some items fly off the shelf, while other items languish for some unknown reason. It's a constant learning experience, and we love it.
See you on Wednesday for the freshest produce in Lake City!
